Intestinal Failure care in Finland

Where is care provided? 

Care for intestinal failure is provided in specialized university hospitals under the national health system.

 

Psychological & Social Support

Support for patients and parents includes:

  • Psychologist

  • Social worker

  • Psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse

Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN)

  • Fully funded by the national health service

Costs and reimbursement 

Families may be eligible for additional support such as:

  • Parental leave compensation

  • Childcare support

    • Hospital social workers and government agencies help families apply

School and education

A comprehensive support system is available:

  • Hospital teacher (school and kindergarten)

  • Special education

  • Coordination between hospital school and regular school

  • Neurology/neuropsychology support for assessing learning needs

Patient organisations

There are unofficial Facebook and WhatsApp groups available for patients. Please check with your hospital to see if they can provide you with the relevant details to join these groups.
